Randi Renate is a multidisciplinary artist whose background in biology and oceanography informs her research-based practice. Operating across installation, sculpture, drawing, and field work, she uses a sculptural framework to explore how ecological, cognitive, and architectural systems are interwoven. Her practice investigates our embodied relationships across species and symbiotic communities in service to oceanic consciousness and environmental advocacy.
Randi Renate (b. en caul 1991, San Antonio, TX) is an MFA graduate of the Sculpture Department at the Yale School of Art, and the recipient of numerous fellowships including Socrates Sculpture Park NY, Lighthouse Works, NY, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, NE, and Fountainhead, FL, Santa Fe Art Institute, NM, and Sculpture Space, NY. Her permanent public sculpture blue is the atmospheric refraction I see you through (2021) is installed at the Adirondack History Museum, and featured in Sculpture Magazine is her public sculpture in NYC for the 2022 Socrates Annual exhibition Sink or Swim Climate Futures. Her podcast CORALESCENCE: conversations highlighting the connection between art and science. These episodes are “studio visits” she conducts with scientists and researchers, exploring a broad range of topics starting with coral restoration, global climate change and ecology.
Are we, as HD wondered in her 1956 ‘Tribute to Freud’, psychic coral-polyps building one upon another? And will we leave our polyp skeleton behind to blend with the coral island? Working with space on this larger scale allows me to physically bring my audience into an intimate space of imaginative perception, reflection, and action- investigating how the ‘micro’ of the individual weaves into the ‘macro’ of the collective whole.
